Frequently Asked Questions
How can I schedule an appointment with the Nelson Scott Evaluation Center (NSEC)?
Please call our office @ 804.728.2190 to schedule an initial appointment. Upon calling our office please leave your information in our general voicemail mailbox. If you are calling to specifically schedule an appointment with either Dr. Nelson or Dr. Scott, please select their individual mailbox number. Your phone call will be returned as soon as possible to help you set up an appointment.
How do I prepare my child for testing?
We recommend a child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast on the morning of the evaluation. You should share with your child that they will be working with a doctor that helps to figure out how kids learn. They will be doing a variety of tasks that might include working with blocks and puzzles, answering questions, and completing reading, writing, and math activities. Breaks will be provided as needed (e.g., snack, rest breaks). We will strive to make your child as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
When will my written report be ready?
A written report will be mailed to you approximately 30 days from the last day of testing. However, this is also dependent upon all forms being promptly returned from parents, teachers, and other professionals (i.e., consulting primary care physicians, psychiatrists, therapists, etc.). We kindly ask that no follow-up appointments or school meetings be scheduled until you receive your written report.
Do you accept insurance?
The Nelson Scott Evaluation Center does not accept insurance. Most insurance companies do not cover testing for learning needs, as these are typically not considered “medically necessary.” Furthermore, very few insurance companies cover testing for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. You may check with your insurance provider to see if you have “Out of Network Benefits” that cover psychological testing. If so, your insurance company may be able to offer partial reimbursement. Upon request, NSEC is able to provide you with an itemized invoice to submit to your insurance company. Patients with flexible spending accounts may also be able to use these funds towards payment for our services.
What other services do you offer?
The Nelson Scott Evaluation Center currently provides consultative services to schools. We are also available to provide in-service training opportunities for schools and local organizations. While we do not currently provide psychotherapy, medication management, or tutoring, we consult with a variety of professionals who are available to provide such services. We are happy to help you establish appointments for this care, if your testing suggests it is appropriate.
What should I expect on the day of testing and what should I bring?
A psychoeducational evaluation is usually accomplished over 1-2 appointments. Testing can last between 4-5 hours (i.e., depending upon the presenting problems). A second day of testing might be required if fatigue appears to compromise performance. Parents are not required to stay for the entire evaluation. We will typically call parents when children have approximately 30 minutes left of testing. You are encouraged to pack snacks, a drink, or a small lunch on the day of testing. Please bring all completed paperwork to the evaluation (e.g., registration forms, behavior rating scales, copies of previous evaluations, and other relevant school records).
When do I get the results from the evaluation?
A Feedback Meeting will be scheduled 2-3 weeks following testing. It is during this appointment that all results from the evaluation will be reviewed. Depending on the age of the child, you will be informed if their attendance is required at this meeting. Formal recommendations will also be reviewed at this time.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We currently accept cash, check, and credit cards.
Do you only evaluate children?
No, we evaluate children, adolescents, and young adults. Upon your initial phone consult with either Dr. Nelson or Dr. Scott, we will gather additional information to ensure we are able to meet your needs.
